The sponsored vault raised £3095
Well done to all who took part. Without fundraising like this the club would not be as good as it is. In the past, money raised has bought beams, bars, mats and a sprung floor for the Collegiate facility. It also pays towards competition expenses and coach education and qualifications.

Four more qualified coaches ...
Four new coaches

Hayley,Chelsey,Melanie and Megan have all passed their first coaching qualification.
They are all experienced gymnasts who have been involved with gymnastics for many years. After attending a British Gymnastics Coaching Course and spending several weeks being mentored at Blackpool Gymnastics Club they all took their exam and passed.
In order to get a qualification, they first had to attend a recognised course. They then had complete set tasks in their log book, be mentored by a more experienced coach for a set number of hours and then pass an examination.
Well done to them all and thank you to the girls who attended the exam as student gymnasts.

GB v France Blackpool Sports Centre March 2008

Day One - Team event Presentation photo

The highly talented French team won the senior competition by a narrow margin, whilst the GBR youngsters leveled things up by taking the junior Team event.

A packed crowd were entertained by some stunning individual displays from both nations.

Of note were the French gymnasts Pauline Morel who took the senior all-around crown, and French junior Youna Dufournet who took the junior event.

The Nottingham star duo, Rebecca Downie and Laura Jones took the Silver and Bronze places on the senior podium with Danusia Francis (Heathrow) and Jennifer Pinches (Liverpool) completing the junior all-around medals standings.

The competition took place in a very tense atmosphere and it was clear to see how much the performances mattered to both coaches and gymnasts. The audience were treated to performances by many gymnasts who will be going to the Beijing Olympics with medals in the sites.

The fact that this International is the third and final control competition for the GBR gymnasts hoping to qualify for next months European Championships, just added to the tension.
The teams will now battle again for the individual apparatus titles on Sunday 16th. This competition is sure to be just as exciting with even more medals up for grabs.

Senior Team – France 229.300
Great Britain 227.500

Senior and Junior Friendly International

A fantastic weekend of competition in Blackpool saw both Teams share the medals and proved how close Great Britain and France are in the world of gymnastics.

Day Two - Apparatus finals

Great Britain and France once again shared the medals in the apparatus finals on day two of the competition in Blackpool.

The senior events were split with France’s Isabelle Severino taking beam and teammate Cassy Vericel floor, whilst Marissa King once again proved her ability on vault with Becky Downie producing a good routine to seal the bars title.

In the junior section things were a bit more one sided with French junior sensation (all-around winner on day one) Youna Dufournet once again leading the way with Gold on vault, bars and floor. Great Britain’s Niamh Rippin was the home crowds highlight as she took Gold on the beam.

Olympic hopefuls head to Blackpool

Rebecca Downie photoGreat Britain’s Women's Artistic Olympic gymnasts will be competing in Blackpool over the weekend 15/16th March 2008.
The very best British Women will take part in a friendly International against their French counterparts at both Senior and Junior level.
2008 is a huge year for the British Gymnast with all the Senior competitors vying for a place in the British Women’s Team that will head to Beijing for the Olympic Games in August. After a stunning display at the 2007 World Championships in Stuttgart (7th Team), the British gymnasts qualified a full team allocation for Beijing meaning 6 places are up for grabs. In Blackpool we will see the squad in tough competition, with each and every gymnast hoping to put in a great performance to take them one step closer to China.

Up against Britain is a formidable French Team who actually finished one place above GB in the 2007 Stuttgart World Championships; proving that they will make this International an extremely close fought and exciting event.

This competition is a key step, as all of the gymnasts also look ahead to the European Championships, to be held in France, 3-6 April. Selection for this prestigious event will be very much determined by the form of the Junior and Senior gymnasts competing in Blackpool.

Great Britain will be represented by some very strong gymnasts who are beginning to make their mark on the World stage. The names to watch out for include Rebecca Downie Hannah Clowes photoa bronze medallist on Beam at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, who played a key role in the British women's historical-best seventh-place finish in Stuttgart; Marissa King who took Gold at the Grand Prix Event in Glasgow last year (Vault) and also medalled at the Beijing Olympic Test event (Bronze Vault) competing against the World best; Laura Jones who is an extremely strong performer on Beam.

Liverpool’s fantastic Women’s Artistic gymnastics legacy continues with Hannah Clowes, Melanie Roberts and Hannah Whelan all competing in this event and hoping to cement there places in the British European and Olympic Team.

On the Junior side the Heathrow gymnasts, Nicole Hibbert and Danusia Francis are sure to take the eye. These two girls are hotly tipped to be star attraction for the London 2012 Games.

Senior Gymnasts: Marissa King (Huntingdon) Hannah Clowes (Liverpool) Kayleigh Cooke (Huntingdon) Emma White (Huntingdon) Melanie Roberts (Liverpool) Laura Jones (Nottingham) Rebecca Wing (Heathrow) Rebecca Downie (Nottingham) Hannah Whelan (Liverpool) Hannah Freeman (Sapphire)

Christmas Disco and Awards Night 2007 disco photo

At the end of last year we had our annual party at the Edge in Poulton. As usual it was a good get together for gymnasts, parents and coaches. A great Buffet was provided by the parents and the Disco was excellent (see below). We must thank the Edge management for providing the room and Janet,Sammy and Linzi for all the organising. During the evening Certificates and Trophies were handed out to gymnasts and voluntary coaches
