Below is a report from Blackpool Council news service

Blackpool’s elite gymnasts have performed at the highest level in the region and their success has qualified two of them to go on to the sport’s National Finals. The five girls, who competed in three categories at the North West Championships, are members of the elite squad and are trained by staff from Blackpool Council six days a week.
The regional event took place at Robin Park Arena in Wigan in September. Rising stars, Chelsey Baldwin, aged 12, a pupil at Collegiate Sports College and Vanessa Hull, 11, who attends Highfield Secondary School, competed in the FIG Espoire’s section where Chelsey came first and Vanessa second. Meanwhile, Melanie Evans, aged 12, came fourth overall in her class and, at Level 3, Ophelia Thompson and Kathryn Ellor, both aged 10 and pupils of St John Vianney RC School, came fourth and fifth respectively. The success attained by Ophelia and Kathryn, against the best gymnasts in the North West, has put them through to the National Finals which will take place in Guildford, Essex, in early November. And Chelsey and Vanessa will also go on to represent the North West at the next inter-regional gymnastics competition, taking place in Halifax on October 30.
Cllr David Owen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Community Learning at Blackpool Council, said: “Success like this comes from a deep commitment on behalf of both the gymnasts and their coaches at Blackpool Council. “We should be proud that local gymnasts are being trained to such an exceptional standard and support their efforts where we can.”
One of the five girls, Melanie Evans, who attends Hollins High School. Accrington, travels a round trip of 65 miles from East Lancashire to Blackpool, six times a week, to receive the high level of training from Blackpool Gymnastics Club.
More than 500 gymnasts, of all ages and abilities, are regularly trained at Blackpool Sports Centre and Collegiate Sports College.

Congratulations:

To Helen Walsh on gaining her BSc. (hon's) in Sports Studies. Helen coaches at both the Blackpool Sports Centre and Collegiate Gym. She has been with the club since she was 8 years old. Photo

Gymnastics Display:

The club put on a splendid display of gymnastics on Lawsons Field as part of the VE celebrations. It is quite a while since we put on a display and so it was the first time for many of the kids. A lot of hard work went in to the preparation, in a short space of time, by gymnasts from the club and elite squads and also their coaches. Sammy did really well to get the Eye of the Tiger routine ready in time.

Club of the week:

Have you all checked out the gymnasticsonline web site where we were featured as club of the week recently. There is a link to the site on the links page, or try this link for as long as the feature remains where it is.

Well done:

To Tony Codling on completing the Coast to Coast relay race, Tony raised money for the club doing this through sponsorship. The race was from Robin Hoods Bay to St Bees. A total of 196 miles was covered in 36 hours

Bill Slater Team competition:

On the 18 & 19 th of June the British Gymnastics Bill Slater Team competition took place at the City of Newcastle Gymnastics Club . The club was represented by Chelsey, Christiana, Vanessa, Melanie, Megan and Kathryn. The competition was very open with some very good and experienced gymnasts taking part in 26 teams.

With a young team representing us it was a good result to finish in15 th place and to have beaten some good clubs. Next year with higher start values we should see an improvement on that position. All our gymnasts contributed to the score with Chelsey, Vanessa and Megan competing on all four pieces, only the best four scores out of five on each piece count towards the team score. Well done to Vanessa for finishing in the highest individual place at 24 th . It was also good to get a big compliment for the floor routines from one of the top judges.

A report from Blackpool Council news service

More medals for Blackpool’s talented youngsters
Some of the talented youngsters who train with Blackpool Council’s Gymnastics Club have scooped a clutch of awards at a recent competition in Warrington.
The North West Amateur Gymnastics Association Championships were held at Birchwood Leisure Centre in early June and Blackpool gymnastics claimed medals in all 11 categories, both floor and vault.
Among the rising stars, Charlotte Radford and Amy McPhail came first and second place in the pre-novice 7 class. Meg-Ann Pearson and Morgan Hanley also claimed the top two medals in the novice 12+ category.
Meanwhile Sophie Mansfield, aged 10, who recently represented Lancashire at the Regional Grades Championship, came overall third in her section, Novice 9 years.
In the Intermediate section, Jodie Hanley, aged 14 swept the board with first place in both floor and vault, giving her overall first.
The gymnasts are put through their paces up to four times per week by the team at Blackpool Sports Centre and Collegiate High School Sports College, under the direction of Janet Mankowska, Gymnastic Development Officer.
Cllr David Owen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Community Learning at Blackpool Council, said: “These results are a great credit to the gymnastics club and to the hard work that is put in by the coaches and the gymnasts themselves."
“At a time when Britain’s young people are receiving negative publicity for bad behavior, it is good to hear stories of these youngsters training hard and achieving good results.”
The success comes at a buoyant time for the Gymnastics Club, which has more than 500 members, 11 trained members of staff and an army of volunteers, as the number of classes has doubled over the last two years.
The club divides the gymnasts into three categories - novice, intermediate and advanced - with a clear progression path for the youngsters to advance through the ranks.
