Schools Competition

Blackpool Sports Centre was buzzing with excitement this week when 40 pupils from across Blackpool took part in a special festival of gymnastics.

Eight primary schools and about 40 children competed in the event, following its successful debut last year.
Most of the youngsters, aged between seven and nine, were fairly new to gymnastics or had never taken part before. The winning team, Stanley, will represent Blackpool at the Lancashire Youth Games on Saturday July 8.
The gymnastics competition has been developed in partnership with the School Sports Partnership (SSP) and with special input from British Gymnastics.
The youngsters were following a number of routines which had been developed by Janet Mankowska, Gymnastics Development Officer at Blackpool Council. Janet and her team developed a special DVD to support the schools, which outlined the routines and suggested the skills and techniques required.

Thanks to all the coaches, parents and children from the club who helped at the event.

Double Success for Blackpool Gymnasts

Two of Blackpool’s elite gymnasts are enjoying high-flying success, following their latest qualifying competition in Southport.

The duo triumphed at the compulsory Level 4 North West elite grades Championships on Sunday Match 19, beating off competition from six other clubs from around the North West.

Katrina Kelly and Charlotte Radford will now compete as a team of four for the North West at the national finals held in Birmingham on May 6. Katrina, nine, came first overall in her very first four-piece gymnastic competition, with a second on beam, third on floor and first on range and conditioning.

Stanley School pupil, Charlotte, was fourth overall and will join her training partner Katrina to form part of the North West team of four at the national finals.

Katrina and Charlotte train for up to 20 hours per week under supervision from their coach Samantha Mankowska at Blackpool Sports Centre and Collegiate Sports College. Katrina and Charlotte are also members of the North West Elite Squad along with another five of Blackpool's Elite gymnasts.

Megan Wills, 13, from St-Mary's High School, also competed in Southport in the compulsory Level 3 out-of-age competition. Megan was overall runner-up, achieving first place in range and conditioning, second on bars, second on floor and beam and third place on vault. Megan also trains for up to 20 hours a week under supervision from her personal coach, Ian Walsh.

Paul Walker, Director of Leisure, Cultural and Community Learning, said: “The dedication of both gymnasts and their coaches has undoubtedly paid off. Their commitment to achieving the highest standards and receiving awards makes all the hard work worthwhile.”

Grades and Phil Tighe

March has been a busy month for competitions. Starting with the Club grades then the Phil Tighe and finishing with the Compulsory grades.
Many hours and a lot of hard work is put in by both the gymnasts and coaches during the preparation for these competitions. As a reward for all this effort we have seen some good results.

A big thanks has to be said to all the coaches who judge for the club at these competitions and to the parents who acted as helpers. Without their support we would not be able to enter to these competitions.

Well done also to the coaches and parents who made it through the snow to Stalybridge.

Challenge Cup Report from Blackpool Council News

Blackpool Gymnasts’ Success At The Double
Two young Blackpool gymnasts have secured fantastic wins at a national gymnastics event.

The British Challenge Cup, held in Aldershot, attracted 50 gymnasts from around the country. The cup is based on a modified code, which means it is for youngsters who haven’t quite made it into the British championships and can act as a step on the ladder to this.

Vanessa Hull secured silver with a magnificent second place overall and a fantastic first place in both the beam and bars categories. Melanie Evans also did the town proud with a splendid 12th place overall.

Melanie attends Hollins School in Accrington, but travels to Blackpool for her training and has been a gymnast for three years. Vanessa attends Highfield School in Blackpool and has been training for four years.

The dedicated duo, both aged 12, train with the Blackpool Gymnastics Club at Blackpool Sports Centre and Collegiate High School. They each put in over 20 hours of training across six sessions each week. Training sessions include cardiovascular, resistance and conditioning training as well as exercises on each of the key apparatus.

Coach Janet Mankowska was delighted with the girls’ results, saying, “This is the first time we’ve entered the competition and we realistically though we might manage to come somewhere around half way so to come out with such high placing was a massive achievement. We are enjoying ever more successes since the Council put in funding for full-time facilities.”

Cllr David Owen, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure said, “The Council is always looking for ways to improve the health and sporting life of all our residents and the gymnastics club is clearly one instance of this.”

“The achievement of Vanessa and Melanie reflects the dedication and time they each give to their training and I congratulate them both.”
